Hi, Welcome To My Blog!

We lose ourselves in books, we find ourselves there too.

God made the horse from the breath of the wind, the beauty of the earth, and the soul of an angel.

The Homosassa River in Florida

I have been to the Homosassa River twice now. Which is located near Homosassa Springs, Florida. Both times we snorkeled with the manatees that come up the river. I love going there and would love to go back there again. you can get manatee tours and can swim with the manatees. Manatees are very large, but they are also very sweet, curious, and harmless. They are very friendly and will come close so you can pet them.

Facts
  • The river is very clear and stays about 72 degrees fahrenheit.
  • Homosassa Springs got its name from the Homosassa river.
  • Going in the fall and winter months of October through April is the best time because are lots more manatees. During the warmer months the manatees are in the ocean, but when the ocean becomes cold they go up the warm rivers.
  • They are the West Indian Manatee. They are usually grayish in color and an average adult grows to about 9.8ft long and weighs about 800 - 1200lb. But they can grow to 13ft and weigh over 3000lb. They live about 60 years old.
  • Manatees have very keen hearing, but when they are sleeping they are often hit by boats that are going too fast. You will usually see scars on the manatees where they have been hit.

I love swimming with manatees because they are amazing animals and very friendly. I recommend that you go to the Homosassa River to swim with manatees. (The Crystal River is not good.) A few weeks ago we went to Florida and swam with the manatees for a vacation. They are amazing animals.
